What the Grades Actually Measure
The grade on the package comes from a published hardware standard, not the brand's marketing department. Locks are tested in a lab and placed in Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3 β Grade 1 being the strongest. That's the whole scale, and a lock with no grade printed anywhere hasn't told you much.
In plain English, the testing looks at three things:
- Cycles of normal use. A machine throws the bolt over and over, standing in for years of locking up twice a day. The question is whether it still turns cleanly at the end or has gone gritty and loose.
- Impact. Blows delivered to the lock and bolt area β the lab version of a shoulder or a boot.
- Forced-entry resistance. Prying, twisting and wrenching on the bolt and cylinder: the attack that uses leverage instead of noise.
You'll find specific figures floating around online β cycle counts, blow counts, force numbers. We're not going to repeat any of them. The real thresholds sit inside a standard that gets revised over the years, and much of what's quoted on blogs is out of date or copied wrong. What you can rely on is the ranking: tested the same way, Grade 1 held up better than Grade 2, which held up better than Grade 3.
The honest one-liner: the grade describes the lock, tested on a lab door. It tells you nothing about your door, your frame, or whether the installer used the right screws β and burglars attack doors, not grades.
Grade 3: Builder-Basic
Grade 3 is the entry-level rating, and it's on an enormous number of Valley homes β especially newer tract construction in Chandler and Gilbert, where the builder's hardware package is chosen by price per door.
It isn't fake security β a Grade 3 deadbolt throws a steel bolt into a frame and will keep an honest person out. What you're giving up is margin: thinner components, looser tolerances, more play in the turn, and a mechanism that wears sooner.
Where it's genuinely fine: an interior or utility door, a door already sitting behind a locked garage, a shed, a low-traffic door on an otherwise secured property.
Where it falls short: as the primary lock on a door facing the outside world. And builder-grade hardware rarely arrives alone β it usually comes paired with a thin strike plate and short screws, and that combination is the real weak link, not the number stamped on the lock body.
Grade 2: The Sweet Spot for Most Arizona Homes
Grade 2 is where we point most homeowners, and it's an easy recommendation to make honestly: a real step up in materials and tolerances without commercial-hardware pricing. Most name-brand residential deadbolts you'd actually want to live with land here.
You can feel it before you ever test it: the bolt throws with authority instead of rattling home. That tightness isn't cosmetic β it's what makes the lock harder to lever, twist and wear out.
For a typical single-family home in Mesa, Tempe, Peoria or Scottsdale, a solid Grade 2 deadbolt with a properly reinforced strike is the honest answer. Going higher buys less than most people expect.
Grade 1: Commercial Strength
Grade 1 is the commercial specification β built for doors used dozens of times a day, where the hardware has to outlast the tenants. For a home it's honestly overkill on most doors. It is not overkill on a few specific ones:

- It's a rental with tenant turnover and heavy use
- The door is hidden from the street β alley side, corner lot, behind a wall or landscaping
- You've already had a break-in or an attempt on that door

- It's the one exterior door everyone actually uses

- It's a back or side door that's rarely opened
- The door is well lit and visible to neighbors
- You're outfitting several doors on a finite budget
- The frame and strike still need work β fix those first

The price gap is smaller than people assume. A standard deadbolt supplied and installed starts from $249 all-in; high-security Grade 1 hardware, supplied and installed, starts from $279. If there's one door in the house that keeps you up at night, that's not a hard decision.
BHMA's AAA Rating β and What "Pick-Resistant" Really Means
Some packaging shows three letters instead of, or alongside, a grade number. That's BHMA's residential rating, which reports the same testing in three separate categories β security, durability and finish β with A as the top mark in each. AAA means top marks across all three.
The finish letter matters more here than it sounds: it covers how the surface holds up to weather and wear, and a west-facing Arizona door takes full afternoon sun for years.
Bump-, pick- and drill-resistant: what's actually inside
- Bump and pick resistance usually comes from security pins β spool- or serrated-shaped pins that catch and bind when someone tries to manipulate or bump the cylinder. A genuine engineering feature, not a sticker.
- Drill resistance usually means hardened steel inserts or free-spinning ball bearings in the cylinder face, so a bit skates or spins instead of biting.
The honest framing: these features raise the time, skill and noise required to defeat a cylinder. They don't make a lock unopenable β no lock is. And notice what they protect: the cylinder. None of it helps if the attack goes through the frame instead of the lock. Which brings us to the part nobody in the hardware aisle mentions.
The Part Nobody Mentions: The Strike Plate
If you take one thing from this guide, take this: on most residential doors the strike plate and its screws are the weakest link β not the deadbolt.
The strike plate is the metal plate on the frame that the bolt shoots into. On a lot of homes it's a thin stamped plate held by two short screws biting into nothing but soft jamb trim. When a door gets kicked, that's what fails: the bolt doesn't shear and the lock doesn't break β the wood splits and the plate tears out of the frame. A Grade 1 deadbolt in that jamb buys almost nothing.
What actually strengthens a door:
- 3-inch screws that reach the wall stud. The highest-value few dollars in home security β they pass through the jamb into the framing behind it, so force has to go through structure instead of trim.
- A reinforced or box strike. Heavier plate, more screw holes, and a box that captures the bolt instead of a thin lip.
- A solid-core door. A hollow-core door is a drum with a lock on it.
- A tight, sound frame. Arizona sun and monsoon swings are hard on jambs; split or dry-rotted frames need attention first.
- Proper alignment. A bolt that only extends halfway because the door has sagged just looks locked β often a lock repair from $89 rather than a replacement.
If you only do one thing this weekend: check the length of the two screws holding your strike plate. If they're short, swapping them for 3-inch screws takes five minutes and does more for that door than moving up a full grade. Single vs. Double Cylinder
Once you've picked a grade, the store asks one more question β and it deserves a real answer.
Single cylinder takes a key outside and has a thumbturn inside. It's the standard for homes for good reason: anyone inside can leave at any time without hunting for a key.
Double cylinder needs a key on both sides. People choose it for doors with glass in them or a sidelight beside them, so a broken pane doesn't hand someone a thumbturn to reach.
The safety trade-off is real: in a fire or a middle-of-the-night evacuation, a double-cylinder deadbolt means nobody gets out that door without finding the key first β a serious problem for children, guests and anyone moving in a panic. Many jurisdictions restrict double-cylinder locks on required exit doors, so check with your local building department before installing one. If you do, the key must live in one fixed spot within reach of the door, and everyone in the house needs to know where.
Our default for a family home is single cylinder plus dealing with the glass directly β security film or laminated glass β so you get the protection without turning your exit into a puzzle. On a storefront with a glass door, double cylinder is a more common call, and the egress rules there are stricter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which deadbolt grade do I need for my front door?
For most Phoenix-metro homes, a solid Grade 2 deadbolt is the right answer β a real step up from builder-grade hardware without commercial pricing. Move up to Grade 1 if the door is unusually exposed, sees tenant turnover, or protects a business. Whichever grade you pick, put the effort into a reinforced strike plate and 3-inch screws into the stud; that does more than the grade stamp does.
Is an expensive deadbolt worth it?
Up to a point, yes. The jump from builder-grade to a good Grade 2 buys better materials, tighter tolerances and a mechanism that still turns smoothly years later. Past that, money is better spent on the strike plate, the frame and the install than on a pricier cylinder. A mid-range deadbolt in a reinforced frame outperforms a premium lock in a split jamb.
What's the difference between ANSI and BHMA?
They're two halves of the same label. BHMA β the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association β writes the hardware standards, and ANSI, the American National Standards Institute, approves them, which is why packaging reads ANSI/BHMA. The Grade 1, 2 and 3 numbers come from that standard, and BHMA's AAA letter rating reports the same testing across security, durability and finish.
Are smart locks as strong as a mechanical deadbolt?
Structurally they're usually the same thing β most smart locks are a deadbolt with a motor and a keypad attached, and they carry their own ANSI/BHMA grade, so you check it the same way.
